Grammar
Saying what you like: gefalen and begeeschtert
Gefalen (to please) works the other way round from English: the thing you like is the subject, and the person who likes it is in the dative (dir, jidderengem). Dat gefält mir is literally "that pleases me". Add net to say it does not.
To say you were impressed, use begeeschtert sinn, and name the cause with vun.
- Dat ass e Film, deen dir bestëmmt gefält. — That is a film you will certainly like.
- Déi eegenaarteg Architektur vum Haus gefält net jidderengem. — Not everyone likes the peculiar architecture of the house.
- De Publikum war vum Artist sengem Optrëtt begeeschtert. — The audience was delighted by the artist's performance.
- Dëse Film konnt mech net sonnerlech begeeschteren. — This film couldn't really enthuse me.
Whose? dem Kënschtler seng Ausstellung
Luxembourgish usually puts the owner in the dative in front of the thing: dem Kënschtler seng Ausstellung, literally "to the artist his exhibition". The possessive agrees with the thing owned: seng goes with Ausstellung, Popularitéit and the plural Zeechnunge. After a preposition the owner stays in the dative: vum Artist sengem Optrëtt. Read these forms as they come; you do not need to build them yet.
- Dem Kënschtler seng Ausstellung hat e grousse Succès. — The artist's exhibition was a great success.
- Dem Schauspiller seng Popularitéit ass duerch säi leschte Film staark an d'Luucht gaangen. — The actor's popularity rose sharply because of his last film.
- Dem Karikaturist seng Zeechnunge sinn elo all als Buch erauskomm. — The cartoonist's drawings have now all come out as a book.
