Get the app

Moien is also a native Android app, with the same course and the same progress when you sign in.

The Android app is in closed testing on Google Play, so it is not on the store yet. Send us the e-mail address of your Google account; once you are on the tester list, join the test programme and install it from Google Play.

Questions

Is Moien really free?

Yes. There is no subscription, no paid tier and nothing behind a paywall: lessons open as you pass the one before, never by paying. The website shows one small, labelled ad at the end of a few pages, never in a lesson; the Android app has none.

Do I need an account?

No. Your progress is kept in your browser. If you want the same progress on your phone and your computer, you can sign in with Google; that is optional, and the account can be deleted from the Settings and data page.

Which levels does it cover?

All six CEFR levels, but not evenly: 28 of the 47 lessons are at A1 to B1, and the levels above have a few each, an introduction rather than the whole level. It is a course, not a certificate, and it is not affiliated with the Sproochentest.

Will it help with the Sproochentest?

It covers the ground the test stands on: speaking at A2 and listening at B1, which is where most of this course sits, with a listening round on most lessons. It has no mock exam and no one to speak with, and it is not affiliated with the test or the INLL. The Sproochentest page explains the format and how to register.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the lessons and the recordings are kept on your device, so the course keeps working without a connection. Only sign-in and sync need one.

Where does the pronunciation come from?

From the Lëtzebuerger Online Dictionnaire (LOD), which publishes recordings by real speakers as open data. 769 of the 1099 words and phrases have one. Phrases and example sentences that no speaker recorded are read by a synthetic voice, and the button says so.

Is there an app?

There is a native Android app with the same course, and the same progress when you sign in. It is in testing on Google Play, and it can also be downloaded from Moien’s releases page on GitHub, linked from this site. There is no iPhone app yet, but the website can be added to the home screen.
