Grammar
Addresses and forms
On a letter the Absender is the sender and the Empfänger the recipient. The address includes the Postleitzuel. On a form you give your name, your address and your phone number, or androen them on a list.
- Dir musst Ären Numm, Är Adress an Är Telefonsnummer uginn. — You must give your name, your address and your phone number.
- Op der Enveloppe steet keen Absender. — There is no sender on the envelope.
- De Bréif ass ukomm, obscho keng Postleitzuel dropstoung. — The letter arrived even though there was no postcode on it.
Separable verbs at the office
Many office verbs are separable: androen, ofmellen, ausstellen. With a modal the verb stays together at the end. In the perfect the ge- goes between the prefix and the verb: ofgemellt, agedroen, ausgestallt.
- Ech muss haut onbedéngt deen alen Auto ofmellen. — I absolutely have to deregister the old car today.
- Well ech nëmme méi mäin Handy benotzen, hunn ech den Haustelefon ofgemellt. — Because I only use my mobile now, I have cancelled the landline.
- D'Madamm gouf ënner hirem Meederchersnumm agedroen. — The lady was entered under her maiden name.
Appointments and phone calls
You say Ech hu Rendez-vous with no article, and add who and when: muer, beim Zänndokter. You can make an appointment by phone, cancel it, or be called back later.
- Ech hu muer Rendez-vous beim Zänndokter. — I have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow.
- Mir hunn e Rendez-vous iwwer Telefon ausgemaach. — We arranged an appointment by phone.
- Mäi Rendez-vous vum nächsten Donneschdeg gouf ofgesot. — My appointment for next Thursday was cancelled.
- Bis elo huet d'Gemeng mech nach net zeréckgeruff. — The council has not called me back yet.
- Ech verstinn dech bal net, d'Verbindung ass ganz schlecht. — I can hardly understand you, the connection is very bad.
