Grammar
virhunn is a separable verb
In a main clause the prefix vir goes to the end: ech hu … vir. Eppes vir hunn means to have something planned, and it is how you ask about someone's plans (see the third example).
After virhunn the plan comes as a clause with ze and an infinitive: … vir, spadséieren ze goen. With a separable verb the ze slips in between prefix and verb: ofzeschléissen.
- Ech hu vir, dësen Dossier haut ofzeschléissen. — I intend to finish this file today.
- Mir hate vir, spadséieren ze goen, mee leider reent et. — We had planned to go for a walk, but unfortunately it is raining.
- Hutt der e Samschdeg den Owend schonn eppes vir? — Do you already have something planned for Saturday evening?
What will happen: wäert + infinitive
To say what will happen, use wäert with the infinitive at the end of the clause: ech wäert, du wäerts, hie wäert, mir wäerten. It can also express a likely guess, often with wuel (probably).
- D'Wieder wäert sech änneren. — The weather will change.
- Ech wäert Är Demande un déi verantwortlech Instanz weiderreechen. — I will pass your application on to the authority responsible.
- Et huet vill geschneit, si wäerte sech verspéiden. — It has snowed a lot, they will probably be late.
- Däin Dram wäert sech wuel ni erfëllen. — Your dream will probably never come true.
Wishes and "if": wéilt, hätt, wier, kéint, géif
To wish for something or to imagine a situation, use the forms wéilt (would like), hätt (would have), wier (would be), kéint (could) and géif (would). After wann the verb goes to the end, and the main clause then starts with its verb: Wann ech … hätt, géif ech …
- Ech wéilt, et wier scho Vakanz! — I wish it were already the holidays!
- Ech wéilt net an enger Groussstad liewen. — I would not like to live in a big city.
- Wann ech genuch Kapital hätt, géif ech mech selbstänneg maachen. — If I had enough capital, I would become self-employed.
- Wann ech hexe kéint, géif ech dech an e Fräsch verwandelen. — If I could do magic, I would turn you into a frog.
