Grammar

Saying what colour something is

After ass (is) the colour word stays as it is: rout, gréng, giel, brong, wäiss, schwaarz. The same goes for the new ones when you use them like this. You already know the basic eight from the family lesson.

  • D'Luucht ass gréng, elo kënne mer iwwergoen. — The light is green, now we can cross.
  • Den Dueder vum Ee ass giel. — The yolk of the egg is yellow.
  • Meng natierlech Hoerfaarf ass brong. — My natural hair colour is brown.
  • Dat krankt Kand ass wäiss ewéi en Duch. — The sick child is as white as a sheet.

A colour in front of a noun

In front of a noun a colour word often takes an ending, as other adjectives do. For now just recognise these forms when you read or hear them: beigë, orangë, donkele, sëlwere. hellblo is also seen with no ending at all.

  • e beigë Reemantel — a beige raincoat
  • en donkele Paltong — a dark coat
  • e sëlwere Bracelet — a silver bracelet
  • hellblo Aen — light blue eyes

d'Faarf, the word colour

d'Faarf is feminine, with the plural d'Faarwen. It also means paint, which is how the LOD uses it in many of its examples.

  • Dee Rucksak gëtt et an dräi verschiddene Faarwen. — That rucksack comes in three different colours.
  • Dës Faarf deckt gutt. — This paint covers well.
