Grammar
Regular verbs in the present
schaffen: ech schaffen, du schaffs, hien schafft, mir schaffen, dir schafft, si schaffen. The pattern -en, -s, -t, -en, -t, -en covers most verbs.
goen is irregular: ech ginn, du gees, hien geet, mir ginn, dir gitt, si ginn. kommen: ech kommen, du kënns, hien kënnt.
Separable verbs
opstoen splits in a sentence: the "op" goes to the end. Ech stinn ëm siwen Auer op. Time goes before the separated part.
Reflexive verbs: mech, dech, sech
Some verbs need a pronoun that points back to the subject: mech (ech), dech (du), sech (hien, si, hatt), eis (mir), iech (dir), sech (si, they). Ech wäsche mech. Du wäschs dech. Hien setzt sech.
The dictionary lists these verbs with sech: sech wäschen, sech setzen. To tell someone to do it, the pronoun follows the verb: Wäsch dech! Setz dech!
- Ech wäsche mech. — I wash.
- Du wäschs dech. — You wash.
- Hien setzt sech. — He sits down.
- Mir setzen eis. — We sit down.
- Ech fille mech gutt. — I feel well.
- Setz dech! — Sit down!
