Grammar
The legal register
laut and gemäss (according to) take the dative: laut dem Gesetz, laut Artikel 3, gemäss der Verfassung.
Fixed phrases: am Fall vun (in case of), ënner Virbehalt vun (subject to), an Kraaft trieden → a Kraaft trieden (the n of "an" drops before K).
Legal texts pile up nouns where speech would use verbs: d'Kënnegung vum Kontrakt duerch den Aarbechtgeber (the termination of the contract by the employer).
- D'Gesetz trëtt den 1. Januar a Kraaft. — The law enters into force on 1 January.
- Laut dem Kontrakt muss de Locataire d'Kautioun bezuelen. — According to the contract the tenant must pay the deposit.
