Grammar
Ordinals: first, second, third
Most ordinals are the number plus -t: zwee, zweet; véier, véiert; fënnef, fënneft; sechs, sechst; siwen, siwent; néng, néngt; zéng, zéngt. Two are their own words: éischt (first) and drëtt (third). From twenty on the ending is -st: honnertst (hundredth), den zwanzegsten Oktober.
Before a noun an ordinal takes an ending like any adjective: den éischten Dënschdeg, den zweete Sonndeg, dat drëtt Joerdausend, um fënnefte Stack. Read these forms as they come; you do not need to build every ending yet.
- Mir hunn den éischten Dënschdeg am Mount Versammlung. — We have a meeting on the first Tuesday of the month.
- Eist Appartement läit um fënnefte Stack. — Our flat is on the fifth floor.
Dates
A date uses the ordinal: either written out, den éischten Abrëll, or as a digit with a dot, den 23. Juni, where the dot stands for the ordinal ending. The months are in the Time lesson.
- Looss dech net uschmieren, haut ass den éischten Abrëll! — Don't be fooled, today is the first of April!
- Säi Gebuertsdag ass den zwanzegsten Oktober. — His birthday is the twentieth of October.
- Groussherzogsgebuertsdag gëtt den 23. Juni gefeiert. — The Grand Duke's official birthday is celebrated on 23 June.
- Silvester fält ëmmer op den 31. Dezember. — New Year's Eve always falls on 31 December.
Prices and big numbers
After a number, Euro and Cent stay as they are: zéng Euro, fënnef Euro, zéng Cent. Numbers are written as one word, as in the Numbers lesson: honnertdausend is a hundred thousand.
Millioun and Milliard are feminine and take a plural: dräi Milliounen, dräi Milliarden. Before a feminine noun, two is zwou: zwou Milliounen Euro.
- Dat kascht dech 30 bis 40 Euro. — That will cost you 30 to 40 euros.
- D'CDe kaschte 15 Euro d'Stéck. — The CDs cost 15 euros each.
- Dat mécht 50 Euro. — That comes to 50 euros.
- De leschte Mount goufe bal honnertdausend Ufroen iwwer eisen Internetsite gemaach. — Last month almost a hundred thousand requests were made through our website.
- D'Investissement belaascht de Budget vun der Entreprise mat zwou Milliounen Euro. — The investment costs the company's budget two million euros.
- Dëse Bam ass méi ewéi honnert Joer al. — This tree is more than a hundred years old.
