Gramática

The written past

Speech uses the perfect, but written narrative allows the simple past for a set of frequent verbs: war (was), hat (had), gouf (became / was), koum (came), goung (went), sot (said), wousst (knew), duecht (thought), fonnt (found), stoung (stood), krut (got).

Time clauses: nodeems (after), ier (before), wärend (while), soubal (as soon as), all with the verb at the end.

  • Nodeems de Krich eriwwer war, koum de Fridden. — After the war was over, peace came.
  • De Renert erschéngt 1872 a gouf zum Nationalepos. — Renert appeared in 1872 and became the national epic.
